Teaching Organization Design in the Digital Age | Introduction to the workshop

Speaker A We have both the speakers and the discussions in place. So I think that would all work out as a welcome. I'll say that the motivation for having this PDW is that when you look around, organizational design has experienced a lot of interest in recent years. Design school have been created, several universities companies are posting jobs for organizational design specialists on LinkedIn and other professional sites. And we have created the organizational design community that is having a number of activities and including publishing journal organization design. The interest in organizational design is due to a number of facts. One is that the cost of poor design is very high. There's been a number of studies that shows that up to 20% to 25% of the variance in an organization's performance can be attributed to the organization design. Secondly, the organizational design industry is very large. There have been a number of studies and calculations that says that we have about 1015 percent of the consulting activities in the world are related to organizational design issues. If that's true, that will amount to about a $30 billion enterprise. And so for a variety of reasons, organizational design is very important. In this PDW, we would like to explore several important aspects of organization design content delivery mechanism, teaching issues, certification and more. And we will examine key aspects of organization design and how should be taught. Design thinking, knowledge and skill set needed for post grade students, executive MBAs and managers, content delivery modes and accreditation processes. The PDW is divided into four sessions, so each session will last for approximately half an hour and we anticipate hopefully a good dialogue. In each of these sessions we have three presenters and five discussants. The three presenters are Tim Litk, Steve Taylor and myself. And one of, as I said, the original presenters, Chuck Snow will not be here. The five discussions are dr. Ken Shepard from the Global Organization Design Society, professor Noon O'Gill from Manchester Business School, greg Joffrey from News Group in Australia, mark Les, scholar on the marks and Professor John Ballard from Mount Subduent University. Again, welcome to this PDW. We hope we have a good session, a lot of great discussions, and we can now move on to the first session. And the session is design thinking. Concepts and processes. And the chairman of that is Steve, and the first presenter is Steve Ram.
